COMPLETED FIELD TRIPS FOR 2010

January 4-12, 2010...Rochester Academy of Science Mineral Section...

We are fortunate to have our member, Jesse Sackett, leading a field trip to South Carolina & Georgia during the first 2 weeks of January.  Replies & all questions, including questions about lodging arrangements and travel coordination with other members, should be directed to Jesse at satchel135@hotmail.com or (585) 406-0938.  Please let him know as soon as possible if you think you may be interested in going on all or a portion of this field trip because a head count is required by mine owners.

January 4, 5 & 6 (Mon. - Wed.) -- Diamond Hill Quartz Prospect, Antreville, Abbeville County, South Carolina.  This is an excellent site to collect:  Amethyst; skeletal, phantom & smoky quartz; encrustation pseudomorphs - quartz after calcite; cacoxenite; microminerals.  Fee:  $15/day/person; under 12 - $6/day; persons older than age 64 who surface collect only - $6/day. Release of Liability form must be signed.

January 8 & 9 (Fri. & Sat.) -- Graves Mountain, Lincoln County, Georgia.  Probably the most famous collecting site in Georgia.  Minerals that may be found:  Kyanite, barite, jarosite, phosphosiderite, variscite, quartzite, quartz, rutile, ilmenite, pyrite, lazulite, pyrophyllite, hematite, geothite, limonite and sulfur.  Commercial mine operations have been suspended.  Group donation (approx. $15-20/person) to caretaker expected.  Bring signed Release of Liability form with you.

January 11 & 12 (Mon. & Tues.) -- Jackson Crossroads Amethyst Mine, Tignall, Wilkes County, Georgia.  This mine was featured on the Travel Channel's "Cash & Treasures" show for it's excellent amethyst specimens with a "Georgia Blue Flash."   Working mine - main pit is off limits & is roped off for safety.  Collecting is allowed in the numerous dump sites.  Over age 12 only.  Must sign a Release of Liability Waiver Form upon arrival - parent/guardian must sign form for minors.  Fee:  $25/day/person.

As leader of this trip, Jesse is in charge & will determine PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) necessary at each collecting site.  Rules and regulations as explained by each mine caretaker are to be strictly followed or you will be expelled from site.
